The activation of IL-12 triggers an immune response against tumor cells. This response occurs ...by encouraging the polarization of M1 macrophages and the production of IFN-γ by Th1 cells. As a result, the immune system is stimulated to produce cytotoxic CD8+ and NK cells, which target and destroy the tumor. By generating anti-tumor cytotoxic immune responses, the use of IL-12 as a cancer immunotherapy may help to slow the growth of tumors. IL-12 exhibits increased effectiveness in inhibiting tumor growth in leukemia and neuroblastoma cancer models.
